I am a 5th Dan Taekwondo instructor having studied the martial arts for 26 years. In that time, I have been involved with three martial arts and have earned black belts in two of them. Aside from my martial arts classes, I have also championed an industry-acclaimed women self defence course and am well regarded for my research into historical applications of traditional martial arts.
Much of my practice of the martial arts changed significantly when I became a parent. Where previously I was happy to train for technical proficiency and to enjoy a friendly contest between training partners, I now had a heightened obsession for the safety of my family. Doing a mental risk analysis, I noted that my worst-case scenario would be ensuring safety for the children during a home intrusion.
I used my weekly training sessions as a way to hone close quarter skills and to increase my striking power; effectively becoming their personal bodyguard. I pushed myself mercilessly to stay effective against an intruder driven by desperation, probably intoxicated or high on drugs, and breaking and entering my property.
Beyond my direct role as protector of my children, I was also able to tap into my years as a corporate executive to address aspects of security similar to what we had to address for operational health and safety, and to control data access within my own home.
While not all parents need to dedicate themselves in the manner that I have, I am convinced that an entry-level awareness of safety issues will go a long way to reduce the probability of risks your family and your children face. This is why I have started the Child Safety Perth blog – to cover any and all aspects of child safety and child safety products a parent would face in providing a good level of care to their children. I invite you to come join me and develop some good safety habits along the way.
