Child Safety and the Poisons Information Centre

Poisons Information Centre 131126

Children are often curious and put all sorts of things into their mouths. This can be extremely dangerous as a child can choke on small items such as toys, or can be poisoned by a variety of substances commonly found in the house. Children under 3 years of age should particularly be supervised closely, and should never be left in an environment which has not been organised for child safety.

Ingestion is when a solid body is swallowed and makes its way into the esophagus or stomach. Sometimes these items can be passed through the system. Sometimes these items need to be removed by a doctor or by surgery. Ingestion of button batteries can be extremely dangerous. Button batteries contain chemicals that can seep when they come into contact with the acids found in the child's stomach. These batteries are found in a range of toys, watches, and other electronic devices. If you suspect that a child has ingested a battery, contact the poison information centre immediately.

Poisons can be in the form of various forms of substances commonly found in every home: medications, household cleaning products, dishwashing powders, insect killers, poisonous plants, and venomous creatures.

  1. Medications should be treated seriously and never referred to as lollies. Read the label carefully, and store all medications out of reach of children.
  2. Household products are dangerous and must be stored properly. Dispose of those substances you don't use and never store househould cleaning products in unmarked jars nor in your refrigerator. Chose containers that are child resistant.
  3. Dishwashing powders are extremely dangerous and caustic if swallowed. Buy child resistant containers and keep children away while adding detergent into the machine. When emptying the machine, check for leftover residue and remove any sludge or caked powder left in the machine.
  4. Let children have a healthy respect for poisonous plants or venomous creatures. Encourage children to wear appropriate shoes, keep grass mowed and clear all rubbish around where children are playing.
