Child Safety Gate

I’ve installed a child safety gate for the few houses we’ve lived in over the years. The child safety gate helps prevent a really young child or toddler going up or down stairs without supervision. That’s where their benefits end.

A child safety gate can be climbed over very easily by children over 3. If installed correctly, they give enough stability for the child to steady themselves on the supporting structure and roll over the top of the child safety gate with their body. This climbing greatly increases the danger to the child if the child safety gate is placed at the top of the stairs.

I have also discovered that parents needing to go down the steps to either get milk bottles or medicine tend to go over the child safety gate. With whatever they’re carrying in their arms, parents would basically step over the structure and continue down the stairs. Ever done this at night whilst you’re sleep deprived?

For those child safety gates that are not even drilled into the wall – children pushing hard on them can loosen them from the wall. Worse still, these child safety gates destroy your paint job and the plaster under them. You should reconsider getting a product that can be drilled into the wall securely.

I recommend child safety gates remain most of the time. It should be closed when the child is not behind another door upstairs, and should be used to remind the child to ask for help before going down the stairs – backwards. The child needs to be taught to wait until the safety gate is opened before starting down the stairs.

A star chart and praise can help reward the young child in learning staircase safety.
