Child Pool Safety at Home

Do you own a pool in your backyard and ever think of child pool safety at home? I’m sure you do. And I’m sure you’re putting your child at risk anyway. Most parents who have a pool are also inviting their friends, and their friends’ children over. You get together, have a yarn, and lo and behold … you’ve taken your eyes off the pool for minutes at a time without knowing it. This is the fastest way to get into trouble.



Child pool safety when swimming needs you to police the pool and watch it all the time. You need to look at the pool irrespective of holding a conversation, sitting down, having a drink or gossiping. You never ever turn your back or do something in the kitchen whilst the children are swimming. WAtoday reports "almost all child drownings in backyard pools are the result of inadequate adult supervision." Note from that article apparently pool drownings have little to do with adequate pool fencing.

When you do have to leave, you pass the Child Pool Safety baton to your friend or another responsible adult who is not in the pool. This new lifeguard then looks at the pool to ensure everyone is safe.

My daughter at 3yo was sitting on the side step of the pool one summer, there were 5 adults in the pool and a few adults around the pool. Not one of us saw that she had taken off her floaty and that she had walked into the pool. All we knew was that we turned around and she was already in the water – for goodness knows how long. Thankfully we pulled her out in time.
