How distracting are children in the car? For real child car safety, parents and drivers must not be distracted while driving. Child car safety is not all about child safety seats! Children going for a ride have to be trained to sit still or to take care of their own entertainment whilst in the cabin. This means preparation of equipment, and discussion of what can be done during the journey.
Children approaching the car, which could be parked in a car park or side of the road need to be taught that they need to look for other cars reversing out of their lots. The first thing that drivers do after starting their cars is to use their mobile phones. Then they throw their car into reverse, start reversing, and then they look around for people behind the car. Children need to be alert to this fact and look for both the reversing lights, and to see if drivers are aware of their presence.
Child car safety is improved with the usage of child locks on car doors. Most modern cars come with child locks that allow doors to be opened from the outside but not from the inside. This is important to ensure that children are not opening the doors accidentally or before the car has come to a complete stop.
The last thing to ensure child car safety is to help the child out of the car. How would you like to have to leap down one metre every time you have to get out of your car? Well, that’s the equivalent of what children need to do to get out of the car. So look out for them.
